Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Melmoth could not hear, down in the dirt, nor could he see. But he could feel. Soon enough, he reached the roots of a tree, and following a gap in them, neared the trunk. He had a choice here. Coming up and immediately fighting, or attempting a trick he'd thought of while he still had time in the ground. The trick he had come up with while digging was a simple one he'd used many times. He would use his shadowdancer powers to create a shadow illusion, and have it move noisily through the woods, hopefully either distracting the elf, or drawing it to a place of his choosing.

Tactics prevailed, and he began putting his plan in motion.

He rose slightly out of the ground, allowing nothing below his eyes to surface. He found, to his delight, that the tree cover provided adequate shadow for him to hide, and he immediately went into the state of mind that allowed the eyes of others to pass over him. For all intents and purposes, he was invisible, though the moment or two before he hid might have allowed him to be spotted.

Phase two. Give evidence to show I most definitely am not here. Two hundred feet or so across from him, where he might have surfaced if he had dug off in the opposite direction, he rose a shadow illusion of himself. It was imperfect and hastily made, but it had the general shape of him, minus the fiery wings. It wasn't going to stand still and be inspected, though. He mentally ordered it to begin running off in a third direction, and to make a hell of a lot of noise.

This it did well. It couldn't actually touch anything, but it did fine with the sounds of footsteps, snapping twigs, smashed bushes, and was roaring obscenities at the elf all the while. It used a few choice ones about the elf's parentage, and one about his love life in relation to poultry. If it failed in its distraction duties, well... At the very least, the elf would rise to being a stony individual in Melmoth's mind. He began gathering the energies needed to open the portal, just in case. If the elf didn't show himself soon, or came for him, he would come up and immediately break through the boundary between planes. If all else failed, he could slip through to the abyss and make his way to the Choronzon Gebäude.

(ooc - A thousand :grr: 's at you for not running off.)

OOC: Run off? Nevah!!

BinC: Aiden waited silently in the leafy boughs of a strong ash tree, patiently waiting for any sign of his opponent. He closed his eyes, listening to the slight breeze in the trees and waiting for any telltale snapping twig or rustling leaf. But all that he heard was the strange quiet that had permeated the hilltop since he arrived. "he's waiting for something," Aiden said simply, opening his eyes again and searching the ground. "He's plotting...I just wish I knew what direction he's going to come from. But I doubt he'd oblige me that."

And then suddenly, it seemed as if the elf's private prayers had been answered. A sudden burst of noise deeper within the grove of trees drew the elf's attention. Aiden rotated deftly on the branch, making little sound as he inspected the source of the noise. Running quickly through the trees, a dark figure could be seen, hurtling across the ground at an unbelievable speed. Aiden squinted in an attempt to get a better view of the figure, but distance prevented him from doing so.

The elf struggled inwardly, asking himself whether or not giving chase was the best idea at the moment. "If we started fighting again...I doubt I could last in a prolonged battle, he muttered, "We'd just be right where we are now...minus a bit more strength." However, leaving enemies just running around the continent wasn't Aiden's style--it was far better to nip things in the bud rather than letting them fester for years.

Aiden tensed, about to jump from the branch to another tree when a thought suddenly possessed him. Why couldn't I hear him before he started running? The elf stopped as he considered the fleeting thought. He would have had to have stepped out of the earth at some point...and I should've heard such a movement...unless he timed it with something else. but...there wasn't another sound loud enough to mask a breaking twig or something like that. Aiden frowned as he continued to consider the problem before him.

If the situation were to be believed, an opponent who had barely made one thoughtless, uncalculated step this entire time was now charging madly along the hill. In the wrong direction, no less. No...no, something else was at work here. Aiden decided to sit back and continue to wait, looking for a sign from his true opponent here. "Nice try," he shouted, certain his enemy could still hear him, "But unless you've managed to become extremely sloppy during your trip underground, I'm not moving! Show yourself, demon!"

Time was up, and his trick was blown. However, it was good for a few more surprises. The illusion halted, and Melmoth began putting his last trick into play. He rose up half a dozen other illusions in scattered places, and loudly spoke through their mouths.

"No. I think I like how this is going."

The illusions began dancing wildly about and emitting all kinds of loud noises, none matching the others as they cycled through the bewildering array. Bird calls, voices, thunder, rain, everything Melmoth could think of, he used. He needed noise to cover him. Straining to control them all, he made one last illusion, and covered himself with it. He maneuvered one of the illusions to him, and released it as he climbed out of the ground, the sound of shifting dirt hopefully masked by the illusions.

Job finished, he released three of the illusions, and stilled the others. He stood alone, as one of them, hoping the elf hadn't considered the idea of wearing an illusion. If he had his way, he would be hiding in one of the near shadows, but he needed to move for this last bit, and hiding did not allow that freedom.

"Can you see me, elf? Can you stop me? Do you dare? I warn you, you have literal seconds to blink out of here before I open a temporary portal to the abyss. This portal will spew hellfire for one minute, destroying pretty much everything in sight. Disbelieve at your own peril, but attempt to stop me and I will not hold back any longer. Live or die, your choice."

He half expected the elf to attack, but the question was, which one? One in four chances to kill me, three of four to die painfully. One sure escape. But the good were slightly insane in his book... As one, he and the three other illusions knelt. Power flowed through his arms as he lunged at the ground, intent on opening the portal. He'd deal with the elf later, when he was more prepared for his magic, and better understood his methods.

(ooc - Welp, I've had enough for now. Even physically overpowering you, I'm not sure how I'd fare with you blinking around like crazy, and I'm don't think I want to test it... :XD: Anyway, if you don't mind, I think I'd like to get a topic with you sometime later where I shadow you in my human guise. Studying you, I guess. :ermm: )

OOC: Grrrr, I'll get you back for this *shakes fist angrily* But i won't fight anymore. I assume we can get one more out of this before moving on to another thread.

BinC: "No. I think I like how this is going."

Aiden shrugged as his eyes scanned the ground below. "Oh well, worth a shot," he muttered, looking for any sign of his tauntingly close opponent. Then Aiden realized that this voice had more than one source. "Can't be more than one of him," he muttered, his mind racing, "What spells can duplicate voices....?" Mere seconds later, a barrage of noise assaulted his ears.

"Illusions," he said, frowning. How could he have missed such an obvious thing? "This guy just keeps pulling out spells, doesn't he? He's a much more dangerous opponent than I realized." Aiden stopped muttering and looked towards the base of the tree, noting the numerous forms below. The elf could only guess that they were distractions, meant to keep their master hidden from sight. The way they were massed at the bottom of the tree, Aiden could only guess that they weren't up to something nice and friendly.

"Better move," he said to himself, grunting as he balanced on the branch and looked for a way to climb to a different tree. However, before he moved, his opponent's voice rang out again.

Aiden smirked, but his mind was already in a grim place. As much as he wanted to stand and fight, the elf knew that even he couldn't withstand the fire of the underworld. He didn't bother to doubt the words, instead, he sheathed his sword quickly while raising another hand. "Shol," he incanted quickly, aiming for just beyond the crest of the hill, for now. Part of the elf wanted to see if his opponent would actually follow through with the attack....and the other part was simply curious to see what form the attack would take. Either way, as the elf blinked out of existence for a moment, he gave a rueful smile towards the illusions on the ground.

"Let's see what you can do then," Aiden muttered, feeling himself being pulled away from the spot. . .

Clawed hands rammed into the earth, catching hold of an indefinable something other than dirt. Power flowed from Melmoth's arms, quickly weakening him, but the damage was done. He pulled to the sides, and for a moment it appeared he had torn the ground apart.

The little hole, barely a handsbreadth across, spewed forth a ball of hellfire straight into Melmoth's face, knocking him away. The hole disgorged a flood of hellfire, fireballs of the stuff arcing high into the air, and falling into the surroundings to destroy trees and glass the ground. Each fireball tore the hole wider, until within moments it was a ten foot wide monstrosity, shining with an eldrich light and emitting the screams and howls of the abyss while clawed hands quested around the edges of the portal, before sinking back into the flames.

For a time, the Abyss and Imythess weren't so different. At least not as far as he could see. Seconds after the portal had opened, everything in sight was on fire. Trees were little more than black piles of ash. Smaller greenery was gone entirely. The ground, for the most part was molten glass, and freely ran downhill in rivulets and glassy streams. It was his own little hell, and few were as prepared to survive in it as he. Unfortunately, it would not be for much longer. The portal still had time, but he had to be careful how he went through. It was not just a leap, after all. Damn it all, here I go... Fate clutched tightly in hand, he dove into the portal between spurts of fire, twisting the magic as he went to allow him to stay after the portal closed. Any demons on the other side had better damn well be ready to run or face the wrath of one who had been denied his kill twice now.

(ooc - still got a bit left on the portal I suppose.)

Aiden narrowed his eyes, trying to catch a view of what was going on from his perch higher up the hill. He could feel intermittent waves of heat, even from this distance. However, despite the lingering danger, the elf felt compelled to stay and witness what was going on. In all his travels, he had never seen someone open a portal to a different realm...much less jump into it.

Balls of flame shot into the air, turning the lower boughs of the surrounding trees into cones of fire and ash. Burning debris began raining to the ground in the small grove, creating a fitting background as the portal of hellish flame began to grow slowly. Aiden got onto his elbows and knees, peering hard as a form emerged from the trees and moved towards the fiery opening.

In a burst of flame, Aiden's unnamed opponent disappeared. The elf continued to watch the spectacle for a few moments afterward, trying to process what had just happened. "He was holding back strength like that the whole time," the elf said with a brief whistle. "Wonder why on earth he didn't just do that to begin with. Would've saved us both a bit of time and effort."

Pushing himself to his feet with a grunt, the elf stretched his arms before turning down the opposite side of the hill. No matter what could have happened, the battle was over for now. But Aiden was certain that they would meet again at some point. Evil like that didn't like being beaten, much less forced to retreat. "Great, that's just what I needed--another enemy following me around. Just plain wonderful. . ."
