Character Creation

Q 1: Can my character be X race?
A: We have no racial restrictions on Imythess. Bear in mind that you may have to be detailed in describing the race you have chosen if it is new to the world. This is to let others understand what you are, at least OOC. Note that races typically do not bestow amazing abilities on the character, so do not choose a race because it gives you laser death beam eyes.

Q 2: Can my character be X class?
A: We do not have a strict class system on Imythess. You may be whatever class you wish, but you will not be held to that class should you choose to change it or remove it later.

Q 3: Can I trade starting items to get a different item?
A: No, sorry. The starting items are designed to help balance all beginning characters. You may choose not to take all of the starting equipment items available to you, but you may not trade them or substitute them with items of equal value.

Q 4: Can I have unique, magical items specific for my character?
A: So long as the item is for flavor and does not offer any specific advantages for the character over others, then you may have that item. You would still be wise to ask the staff for permission in the Admin Requsets forum before you find yourself asking for forgiveness.

Guilds

Q 5: What are Guilds on this site?
A: Guilds are member-created alliances of characters within Imythess that share a similar cause, in character. They range from good to evil, lawful to chaotic, and just about anything else one can dream up. If there's no guild that appeals to you, try to start one up!

Q 6: How do I join a Guild?
A: Guilds usually have one of two ways to join: either a recruitment method, wherein one simply pays a small fee and is admitted, or an IC-justified method, where your character must roleplay with an existing member first. Regardless of which method they use, you still need to get the approval of the guildmaster to join both verbally and by going to Preferences -> Joinable Groups. Guilds also have certain requirements that must be met, such as having a certain cause or alignment.

Q 7: How many Guilds may I be a member of at one time?
A: You can be in multiple Guilds, but the most powerful/influential will be the one your member group is assigned to should it have a special group. You may only lead one guild at any given time.

Q 8: How do I start a Guild?
A: Guild Creation. Just read these simple guidelines.

Items

Q 9: Can I fuse item A with item B from the shops to make unique item C?
A: Item fusions are allowed, and there is a guide on what types of modifications are allowed. You will need to post in the Staff Requests to receive permission.

Q 10: So, I can fuse two weapons into a unique one. What about animal companions?
A: You'll have to seek admin permission for this one, just as with weapons or items.

Q 11: Can I purchase item A but use a different picture for it?
A: Sure! Using images you like is a great way to personalize your inventory. Please keep in mind that most "awesome" looking equipment may actually be more fitting of a masterwork quality item than a basic item, especially when it comes to weapons. Also, please respect hotlinking and copyright courtesies when using your own images. Images should reflect the item you purchased in some way - buying a hand axe and showing an image of a double-headed large axe would become a problem.

Q 12: Can I purchase item A but call it something else? (ex. Buying a cat but saying it is a rabbit instead)
A: Generally, we encourage members to think of new and exciting items. We cannot put every possible item in our shops, so the practice of item switching is common. The rule is that the person must purchase an item most similar to the one that they want. A rabbit and a cat are both small animals and could be interchanged. A sword would not be a fitting substitute for an exotic axe weapon. To be sure, please post all specific questions about this in Staff Requests or Help forums in order to receive permission or recommendations about what would be the most appropriate in-shop purchase.

Q 13: Can I add enchantments to X magical weapon/armor?
A: Yes, so long as that weapon is A.) Masterwork with at least one open enchantment slot or B.) A weapon that was magical to begin with, possessing at least one open enchantment slot.

Q 14: Can I enchant an item that is not a weapon or armor?
A: Yes, namely items such as jewelry. They can be given the Spell Storing enchantment.

Q 15: How do I sell items back to the shops?
A: Just post in the sales counter stating that you are selling said item. When the shops are filled, gold will be added to your account, and the item may be removed from your inventory. You cannot sell your starting equipment.

Q 16: Can I sell items to other players? How?
A: Yes, you can sell to players. Either hold an auction to find someone that wants to buy it (See below) or, if you are already sure of whom you are selling it to, post in the sales counter stating who is buying, and for how much. They will have to confirm this after your post, just so there is no doubt.

Q 17: Where can I hold an auction?
A: The Auctions and Member Sales area, of course. Just post what you're selling, along with any desired starting bid, and watch them fight for it.

Q 18: How do I purchase items?
A: First off, you need to have enough gold to afford the item. Once that's taken care of, post in the Sales Counter with a thread saying what you are buying. Please use the mandatory format for all your topics in the Sales Counter.

Q 19: I have the Familiar feat. Can I have a familiar not listed?
A: So long as it is the same general size as the other familiars, then go right on ahead. The regular familiars are generally the size of a cat or large bird, so long as they are under 50 gold in the shops. The improved familiars are, naturally, larger, and may be any creature under 150 gold. If there is any lingering confusion about specific animals, post in the Help Forum.

Q 20: Can I use spell X on my pet/familiar/NPC/other?
A: Yes, just be careful that you don't regret it later. If you wish to use a drastic spell, such as Modify Memory or Curse of Betrayal, you must gain permission from the other character before acting.

Q 21: Can I sell my items, skills, feats and PrC classes back to the shops?
A: Yes, all for half the original prices.

Q 22: Can I transfer items between my characters?
A: Absolutely. Post in the Sales Counter what is being transferred to where using the mandatory format, so that there is a paper trail of where the item came from. Make sure that you have made a topic in the Alt Registry, posted with all your characters in it, and put a link to the topic in your profile under Profile -> Update Profile -> Link to Alt Registry.

Q 23: Can I give an item to another player?
A: Of course! When giving an item, whether as a gift or for some other reason, simply post in the Sales Counter saying what you are giving to who using the mandatory format. They do not need to confirm that they are receiving the item.

Role-Play

Q 24: My character is a rogue, can he/she steal items?
A: Yes and no. Your rogue character may steal mundane items in threads so long as they do not increase the power of the character. You may steal small pouches of gold or other items that would be used to further an RP, but those items do not remain with your character and may only be used in that particular thread. If you wish to steal a weapon of some sort, realize that you will only find the most basic of weapons lying around, and you will need permission from everyone else in that particular thread to use the weapon as more than a prop. Stolen gold may not be used to purchase items from the shops.

Q 25: Can I use IC gold (not gold earned by role playing) to purchase items in game?
A: No, sorry. The only gold that may be used to buy from the shops is the amount shown in the sidebar for your account on any given post.

Q 26: May I control an NPC?
A: Yes, but there are certain rules and guidelines related to NPCs. There are two types of NPC. First is a personal NPC. This is a close family member, friend, pet or soon to be pet, and characters that are following the orders of a particular PC. The second type is a general NPC. This can be a barkeep, a server, a random person on the street, and so forth. Personal NPCs are controlled by the owner of PC they are associated with. General NPCs can be controlled by anyone in the topic.

Q 27: Can I RP in more than one place at one time?
A: Yes, just be sure not to overload yourself with topics. Also, try to keep a timeline in mind.

Q 28: What is defined as power-playing/god-moding?
A: Powerplaying: When you control someone else's character, as well as your own, without the other person's permission. It can also include determining the outcome of your attack on someone else as ending in your favor without giving them a chance to defend themselves. If you find yourself wanting to do this for results of attacks or spells, please use the word "if" to designate what the effect would be if the other character is hit by an attack or spell.

God-moding: This is when you play an overly-powerful character that often cannot be defeated/hurt in battle. It's like a "Get Out of Jail Free card." You create an illogical or even imposable outcome for an event simply because you didn’t like the way the story was going or you want something different to happen.

Q 29: May my character have an NPC travel with them? If so, what is this NPC limited to?
A: This really depends on the NPC and how long they will be travelling with your character. Best to seek a staff member's approval before trying anything.

Q 30: What sorts of things is my familiar limited to?
A: Familiars are limited to normal animal actions, for the most part. There are spells and feats that are purchasable to improve familiars, but the most basic ones are normal pets with an added sense of some kind. More detail can be found in the Familiar feat.

Q 31: If I have two characters, can I role-play with myself?
A:Yes, as long as it is a well thought out and productive role play and not something that was clearly done to make gold. It is not encouraged at all, though, and it is best to find another person to RP with.

General

Q 32: Why can’t I use the CBox?
A: You'll need to create a profile to access the chatbox. To do this, enter a name, click "Profile" on right bottom right, and choose a password. After that, simply type a message and you'll be set to go. If you have disabled popups or javascript, the "Profile" link may not work for you.

Q 33: It is my birthday! Where/when do I get my gold?
A: Post in the Sales Counter letting us know! This can be done up to five days before and five days after the actual date. You will receive your gold whenever the shops are next filled.

Q 34: How do I make a signature?
A: Navigate to Profile -> Update Signature underneath the site's banner, next to your inbox. Any BBCode that can be used in the regular board can be used in a signature.

Q 35: How do I put pictures in my signature/post?
A: You can click the "Image" button above the text box and put the link to the image in the pop up box. The board will do the rest for you.

Q 36: How do I put a link in my signature/post?
A: To add a link to a webpage, you can click the "URL" button above the text box and fill in the fields it ask you for. The board will do the rest for you.

Q 37: How do I put up an avatar picture?
A: Navigate to Preferences -> Change Avatar and then either select an image from your computer to use, or paste in a URL to the desired image.

Q 38: Is there any rule on what kind of picture I can use for my avatar?
A: So long as it is site-appropriate, there are no rules. The board will automatically shrink images larger than 170 pixels wide by 250 pixels high. If you're uploading an avatar to the board, the file size must be 35kb or smaller.

Q 39: I would like a name change. How do I do that?
A: Post in the Staff Requests forum simply asking for a name change. It will be handled the next time an admin fills requests.

Q 40: Can I transfer skills or PrC levels to a different character?
A: Yes, you may do so. However, keep in mind that starting skills and equipment may not be transferred. If a member does not meet the pre-requisites for having the PrC, they may not use it until they meet the requirements.

Q 41: What is an advanced / intermediate / expert role-player? How do I become one?
A: These are members that have proven themselves capable of higher-level writing and creativity. The guidelines to gaining higher RPer levels can be found here.

Q 42: I have an idea for this site! Where would I put it?
A: The suggestions board, of course! Please note that there is a separate section for Prestige Class related suggestions.

Warnings

Q 43: How would I earn a warning from a moderator or administrator?
A: An infraction of the board rules can and may earn a warning.

Q 44: So this is a PG-13 site? What's considered PG-13?
A: It does not matter what any other source says, Imythess could be shut down if any of the following is found on the site, and the creator of the site is held responsible by law:
  • Members under 13 years of age.
  • Any content that breaks any local, county, state, national or international law.
  • Content that infringes upon any rights (including, but not limited to, copyrights and trademarks).
  • Excessive hotlinking by sites not located on an ZetaBoards/InvisionFree server of images hosted by ZetaBoards/InvisionFree.
  • Hotlinking images from other websites without proper permission.
  • Abusive, threatening, defamatory, racist, or obscene content.
  • False information or libel.
  • Gambling or illicit drugs. (The real life kind, RPs that touch on these subjects are legal.)
  • Pornography, nudity, or sexual material of any kind.
  • Excessive profanity.
  • Terrorism.
  • Content that is invasive of privacy or impersonation of any person/entity.
None of the above are allowed and banning the member without warning may not even come from us (the staff), but from our web host itself. There is no reason why any of the above should be a problem, though, as all are addressed in the rules; no matter what other definition the terms used may have, what is outlined is what is meant to be followed.

Q 45: How many warnings am I allowed to get?
A: The maximum warnings that will be given before a ban is four to a member. These warnings will be placed on your main account for tracking purposes, but if banned, all of your characters will be similarly treated.

Q 46: What do I need to do to lower my warn levels?
A: Keep your behavior in check for an initial period of three months since the latest warning, and then you may ask an admin for it to be lowered. Only one warning will be removed at a time, started with your newest and going down. If you have a bad record, however (such as multiple and frequent infractions of the rules), the Admin may deny your request to have your warning removed. It is your responsibility to request a warnings removal, not a Moderators or an Admins.

Q 47: At what point would a member be banned from the site?
A: The latest a member will be banned is after four warnings. However, the moderating staff may or may not choose to ban a member earlier or later at their own discretion, given good reason.
